Dog Years to Human Years: How Old Is Your Dog Really? (Chart and the Science Behind It)

ยท 5 min read

Everyone knows the rule: one dog year equals seven human years. It is easy to remember, but it is wrong. Dogs mature much faster than humans in their first two years and then age more slowly, and the pace also depends on the dog's size. Here is a more accurate way to convert, with a chart.

Where the 7-to-1 rule came from

The rule most likely comes from comparing average life spans: humans live around 70 years and many dogs around 10, a ratio of roughly seven. It is a convenient shortcut, but it treats dog aging as a straight line. In reality a one-year-old dog is often fully grown and sexually mature, closer to a teenager than to a seven-year-old child.

What the science says

In 2019, researchers at the University of California San Diego studied changes in DNA methylation, a chemical marker that shifts as living things age, in Labrador retrievers and compared them with humans. They proposed a formula: human age โ‰ˆ 16 ร— ln(dog age) + 31, where ln is the natural logarithm. In a spreadsheet you can write it as =16*LN(dog_age)+31. The curve rises steeply in the first years and then flattens, which matches how dogs really age.

Conversion chart

Using that formula, a 1-year-old dog is roughly 31 in human years, a 2-year-old about 42, and a 3-year-old about 49. A 4-year-old is about 53, a 5-year-old about 57, and a 6-year-old about 60. At 7 a dog is about 62, at 8 about 64, at 10 about 68, at 12 about 71, and at 15 about 74. The formula is less reliable for puppies under one year, so use it for dogs aged one and older.

Size and breed still matter

Large and giant breeds tend to have shorter lives and show signs of aging earlier than small breeds, so a 9-year-old Great Dane is closer to old age than a 9-year-old Chihuahua. The formula was built on Labradors, a medium-to-large breed, so treat the result as a good estimate rather than a medical fact. Veterinary guides often give separate charts by weight class.

Find your dog's exact age

If you know your dog's birthday, or the date you adopted a puppy whose age was known, enter it in our Age Calculator to see the exact age in years, months and days, then apply the formula. For a rescue dog with an unknown birthday, a vet can estimate the age from the teeth, coat, eyes and joints.

Why it matters

A dog's life stage affects its food, its exercise needs and how often it should see a vet. Many vets recommend more frequent health checks once a dog reaches its senior years, which start earlier in large breeds. Converting to human years is a handy reminder that a 7-year-old dog is already roughly in its early sixties in human terms.
